The European Union's aluminium sector is advocating for a 30% export duty on scrap metal to prevent its outflow, which hampers domestic producers. Scrap exports reached a record of 1.26 million metric tons in 2024, largely due to lower U.S. tariffs on scrap compared to finished aluminium. Industry leaders are expressing frustration over their inability to compete with Asian buyers who can offer higher prices due to various subsidies. The EU Commission is currently assessing the necessity of such a levy.
