On July 7, 2024, Taoyuan Mayor Zheng Wen-Can, who was implicated in corruption, was arrested and detained pending trial but was released on bail of 5 million yuan by the Taoyuan District Court, causing outcry due to the judge with the surname Deng's close relationship with Zheng. The judge was previously involved in a case where he acquitted individuals accused of aiding a pharmacy illegally. The decision sparked public controversy as the prosecution immediately appealed against the bail ruling. Zheng, also the Chairman of the Mainland Affairs Council, was taken in for questioning on July 5 for allegedly being involved in corruption during his tenure as Mayor. His ties to the judge overseeing his case have raised suspicions among the public.
