Idemitsu Kosan, Japan's second-largest oil refiner, plans to establish a lithium sulphide production facility at its Chiba refinery to support Toyota's electric vehicle ambitions. The plant, projected to be completed by June 2027 at a cost of approximately $143 million, aims to produce enough solid electrolyte to serve 50,000-60,000 EVs annually. This project is part of a collaboration with Toyota to develop next-generation solid-state batteries, which promise to enhance driving range and reduce charging times compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries.
