The High Standards and Peculiar Demands of Hong Xiuquan's Concubines: Beauty and a Disturbing Requirement

Reported about 1 year ago

The Taiping Heavenly Kingdom movement led by Hong Xiuquan was a massive peasant uprising during the late Qing Dynasty in China. Despite the initial advocacy for gender equality, Hong Xiuquan's indulgent and oppressive behavior towards women, particularly his 2300 concubines and palace maids, was revealed. Hong Xiuquan was known for being extremely picky when selecting his concubines, prioritizing beauty and social status, and enforcing a disturbing policy of personally verifying their virginity through a cruel method.
