California has been designated as the first state to receive federal funding to establish a hydrogen energy hub, aimed to produce hydrogen for vehicles, manufacturing, and electricity generation. Announced on July 17, 2024, the U.S. Department of Energy will initially provide $30 million to launch planning and design, with potential total funding of up to $1.2 billion. As part of the Biden administration’s climate strategy, this initiative is expected to attract over $40 billion in private investments and create tens of thousands of jobs.
