On July 17, 2024, reports indicated that EU member states held a preliminary vote regarding the imposition of special tariffs on electric vehicles from China. Although the result was non-binding, it could influence future decisions. A formal vote is required by early November, and if fewer than 15 countries oppose it, the tariffs may be enacted retroactively from July. Support for the tariffs comes from France, Italy, and Spain, while Germany, Finland, and Sweden abstained. The EU aims to address unfair pricing advantages due to Chinese government subsidies, but this could provoke retaliation from Beijing and affect manufacturers like Tesla and BMW in China.
