Europe's Dam Removal Movement to Protect Salmon and Biodiversity

Reported 3 months ago

As reported by the BBC on July 17, 2024, Europe is embracing a dam removal movement to restore ecosystems devastated by aging dams. Since 2021, Finland has been dismantling a series of dams along a key river, leading to signs of recovery in local salmon populations. Ecologists note the presence of both adult and juvenile salmon, even spawning at the river's lower reaches. Due to the inefficiencies of outdated dams and the costs of environmental compliance, the Finnish government has decided to remove them. With only about a third of global river networks maintaining free-flowing conditions, dam removals are vital for enhancing biodiversity and overall fisheries health.
