Amid recent embassy controversies, Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung has instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to draft new regulations for the use of official vehicles, including provisions for spouses. These new regulations will allow diplomatic personnel's spouses to use official cars in a reasonable manner, with auditing, spot checks, and inclusion in performance evaluations to strengthen the management of vehicle usage. Minister Lin's decision comes in response to allegations of misuse of public funds and official vehicles by diplomatic staff, such as Taiwan's representative in the US, Yu Da-huan. The new 'spousal regulations' aim to balance flexibility for spouses involved in diplomatic work while preventing abuse through enhanced oversight measures.
