Semiconductor silicon wafer manufacturer Globalwafers (6488) announced its subsidiary GWA and MEMC LLC have signed a non-binding preliminary memorandum with the US Department of Commerce, under the CHIPS and Science Act, to receive up to $400 million US dollars (about NT$13 billion) in direct subsidies. Globalwafers also plans to apply for up to 25% investment tax credit exemption for eligible portions through its subsidiaries, potentially gaining over $1.2 billion US dollars in total. This makes Globalwafers the second Taiwanese company after TSMC to receive resources under the semiconductor act to build facilities in the US.
