On July 18, the Taiwanese legislature, with support from blue and white coalition parties, voted to lift the ban on group travel to China. However, Liao Chui-Cheng, head of the Mainland Affairs Council, warned that significant risks remain for Taiwanese citizens visiting China, particularly due to national security laws that include punitive measures against Taiwanese independence advocates. He urged the public to cautiously assess the necessity of such travel to ensure their safety. Liao emphasized the ongoing surveillance and detention incidents involving Taiwanese in China, and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining communication mechanisms, despite challenges with China's rigid political framework.
