On July 17, 2024, the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, swam in the Seine River to demonstrate the cleanliness of the water and ensure its safety for hosting Olympic events. The swim aimed to showcase the successful river cleanup efforts ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics, which are set to begin in just nine days. Hidalgo's swimming team, which included Olympic canoe champion Tony Estanguet, swam about 100 meters using breaststroke and freestyle strokes. The Paris government has invested 1.5 billion euros in the river cleanup project, and despite concerns about water quality, officials are adamant that it is safe for Olympic activities.
