On July 15, a shooting incident near a mosque in Muscat, Oman, resulted in the deaths of 9 people. The extremist group ISIS claimed responsibility the following day. The attack involved three armed assailants targeting Shia worshippers and resulted in a firefight with Omani security forces that lasted until the morning of July 16. Authorities confirmed that the attackers were killed but did not disclose their motives or identities. This rare act of violence in Oman has raised concerns about the resurgence of ISIS, which had previously conducted attacks against Shia communities in other countries.
