Taiwanese Councilor Zhang Zhaoliang Detained for Suspected Lobbying, Prosecution Investigates

On July 17, 2024, Democratic Progressive Party councilor Zhang Zhaoliang from Taoyuan City was searched by the Taoyuan District Prosecutors Office in ten locations for suspected involvement in lobbying for the demolition report of an illegal construction in Longtan District years ago. He was detained for allegedly violating the Anti-Corruption Act and fabricating false documents. After overnight questioning by prosecutors, they deemed the offense serious with the risk of collusion and witness tampering, thus applying for his detention in the early morning of the following day. Several individuals related to the case were also questioned and released on bail, while others were let go. The investigation is ongoing under the Anti-Corruption Act and the Penal Code for bribery and document forgery.
