Eel is an important freshwater fish species in Taiwan, primarily exported to Japan. However, recent years have seen a significant decline in exports, with Taiwan's eel production dropping from over 60,000 tons in the 1980s to just 8,000 tons today, as China has taken over the market. Japan's eel farming relies heavily on wild eel larvae, which are becoming scarce, leading to higher prices and difficulties for farmers. Meanwhile, Japan has made advancements in eel breeding technology, potentially putting Taiwan at a further disadvantage if it cannot adapt and innovate in its eel farming practices.
