In a recent media interview, former US President and Republican presidential candidate Trump claimed Taiwan took away chip business and should pay protection money to the US, sparking public debate. In response, Lin Yu-chang, Secretary-General of the Democratic Progressive Party, stated that Taiwan-US relations are currently at their best, with significant growth in trade, investment, smooth military sales, and security cooperation in recent years. Lin mentioned that Trump's remarks were meant to encourage Taiwan to demonstrate the same determination in safeguarding its security as Japan, South Korea, and the EU, which Taiwan has already shown in the past few years by strengthening defense investments and shouldering its international responsibilities. Lin emphasized that as the leading political party in safeguarding Taiwan's values of freedom and democracy, the DPP would continue to work together with democratic alliance partners worldwide.
