The U.S. government is tightening regulations on connected vehicles imported from China, with the Commerce Department planning to announce proposed rules in August that would impose restrictions on certain Chinese-made software. According to Deputy Secretary Alan Estevez, critical automotive components managing software and data must be manufactured by U.S. allies. The announcement comes as the U.S. prepares to impose a 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles starting August 1, intensifying trade tensions between the two countries. Estevez highlighted concerns over data collection capabilities in modern vehicles, likening them to 'a smartphone on wheels'.
