US judge suspends Alaska Cook Inlet lease, pending additional environmental review

Reported 3 months ago

A federal judge in Alaska has suspended the only lease from a 2022 oil and gas lease sale in Cook Inlet due to deficiencies in the environmental review. The judge found the analysis failed to properly assess the impacts on endangered Cook Inlet beluga whales and criticized the lumping together of different marine mammals. The lease is suspended pending a new environmental review addressing these issues, impacting Hilcorp Alaska LLC, the main gas producer in the region. Conservation groups welcomed the ruling as a victory for communities, beluga whales, and the environment.
