On July 17, 2024, the Youth Daily reported that the US Marine Corps Systems Command (MARCORSYSCOM) issued a Request for Information (RFI) seeking to develop four different caliber lead or similar material shot shells, along with disruptor guns and optical sights mountable on rifles to enhance the infantry squad's Counter-Unmanned Aerial System (C-UAS) capabilities. The goal is to improve the unit's ability to counter drone threats on the battlefield. The Marine Corps Combat Development Experimentation Center and others will work on developing these new equipment to address the lack of air defense capabilities in light infantry units compared to armored vehicles. The initiative seeks to equip various rifles, light and heavy machine guns, and grenade launchers with new ammunition, extend their range, and enhance fragment killing radius. Additionally, the Marine Corps aims to develop lightweight anti-drone equipment that can be carried by individual soldiers in order to establish layered air defense capabilities at the squad level.
