In Hualien on June 22, 2024, a 16-year-old teenager tragically drowned while playing in the Meilun River source in Xiu Lin Township. The teen, along with friends, went swimming in the murky waters, where he disappeared after getting stuck in a crevice near the embankment. Despite efforts by firefighters searching for over an hour, the teenager was found trapped in the crevice after more than 1 hour and was pronounced dead due to prolonged submersion. Authorities advise caution during summer water activities and urge parental supervision for student safety during the holidays.
