On June 24, 2024, in Mahachkala, the capital of Dagestan, armed gunmen in black clothes attacked an Orthodox church on the Day of Pentecost, engaging in a shootout with police. An old Jewish community in the coastal city of Derbent was also targeted, with arson following the attack. Several officers, priests, and security personnel lost their lives during the attacks on two Orthodox and two Jewish churches. Authorities confirmed several gunmen were killed by police, and an investigation is ongoing to determine the motive, with the Russian Investigative Committee looking into a possible 'terrorist act.' The head of the Derbent district was detained as his two sons are suspected of involvement. Dagestan, known for its poverty and Muslim-majority population, has faced attacks by jihadist groups in the past. Recently, attacks inside Russia have been linked to the conflict in Ukraine and Western countries, such as the 2024 attack on the Krokus Concert Hall attributed to ISIS.
