In 2024, data from Morningstar Direct shows that only 18.2% of actively managed funds outperformed the S&P 500 in the first half of the year, indicating a trend where actively managed funds struggle to beat the index. Over the past 10 years, the average share of active funds that beat the S&P 500 was 27%, making 2024 an especially weak year. Passive funds, on the other hand, consistently trailed active funds in beating the index, with 13.4% of them outperforming so far this year. Experts suggest sticking to buying index funds or active mutual funds with a proven track record for investors in 2024.
