In Lusaka on June 8, 2024, Zambia's court sentenced 22 Chinese fraudsters to 7 to 11 years in prison. Despite China's long-standing influence in Africa, ranging from legitimate industries to scams, a fraud group was busted in Zambia in April, with 77 suspects arrested, including the 22 Chinese nationals. The convicted Chinese admitted to illegal website operation, identity theft, and online fraud. The company involved employed young Zambians to engage in fraudulent activities using foreign SIM cards. The raid confiscated over 13,000 SIM cards, weapons, and bullets. Victims suffered monetary losses and compromised personal data. Apart from the Chinese, one Cameroonian citizen was also among those sentenced.
