On July 7, 2024, a canoe challenge to cross Xiao Liuqiu resulted in a distressing situation where 36 individuals were stranded at sea due to poor marine conditions. The event, organized by the Pingtung County government, had 120 participants facing exhaustion and difficulties reaching their destination. With some even having to drift at sea, including a mother with a child, the Coast Guard swiftly responded and successfully rescued all participants after over 4 hours of efforts. The participants were safely returned to Bai Sha Fishing Port in Xiao Liuqiu. This incident highlighted the challenges posed by the marine environment during the canoeing activity.
