The collaborative 8K ultra-high-definition documentary 'Forest of Gods: Alishan Forest Railway Journey,' produced by Public Television and Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK), showcases the scenery along the Alishan Forest Railway line and captures detailed images of century-old steam locomotives and railway construction techniques. The film features the iconic Shay 21 steam locomotive, unique for its upright cylinders, and highlights the intricate gear mechanisms and drivetrain of the locomotive. After being retired and displayed for 44 years in a park in Chiayi, the locomotive underwent a 3-year restoration process before returning to service in early 2022, running on environmentally friendly bio-coal fuel. NHK's Chief Producer Shizaki So praised the documentary for allowing viewers to appreciate the railway details in exquisite 8K quality, including the umbrella gear, drivetrain, and unique track layouts like the figure-eight, Z-shaped, and horseshoe-shaped railway construction methods designed for steep terrains.
