A 49-year-old man from Taipei city driving a Mercedes-Benz splashed with red paint, honked loudly outside the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), then accelerated to crash into the flower bed in front of the Presidential Office. He was immediately subdued and arrested by the police. Following a hearing, the man, surnamed Du, was granted bail of 200,000 NTD. Accompanied by a police officer, Du went to the hospital for medical treatment and shielded his wife's face from the media when leaving the Taipei District Prosecutors Office. Du claimed it was an unintentional act caused by a momentary lapse of attention, refused to clarify the meaning of the phrases written on his car, and is prohibited from leaving the country and going to sea as part of his bail conditions.
