Advisory Council member of Taiwan Mainland Affairs Council Liang Wenjie Claims 'Cross-strait Relations are between Two Countries,' Draws Sharp Comment from Ma Ying-jeou's Office. Bill Tai: 'Of Course They're Not Subordinate to Each Other'

Reported 12 months ago

On July 1, 2024, Vice Premier of the Executive Yuan Bill Tai was interviewed in the Legislative Yuan. Advisory Council member Liang Wenjie of the Mainland Affairs Council stated on that day that 'the Republic of China does not exist, and 'Chinese independence' and 'Taiwan independence' are the same.' He suggested referring to both sides as 'cross-strait' or 'Republic of China and People's Republic of China' is just two countries; however, Ma Ying-jeou Foundation CEO Hsiao Hsü-cen criticized this viewpoint, recommending Liang Wenjie to resign and for President Lai Ching-te to dissolve the Mainland Affairs Council. In response, Premier Bill Tai stated that 'the Republic of China and the People's Republic of China are of course not under each other's jurisdiction.' This status quo is vigorously upheld by the people of the country, and the government will strive in this direction. Additionally, regarding the criticism faced for suggesting incentives for single or childless individuals at a civil affairs event, Bill Tai clarified that his comments were intended to encourage effective population planning policies and were not meant to invade privacy.
