Amid Taliban restrictions on women's roles in Afghanistan, Frozan Ahmadzai, a woman who aspired to be a doctor, now makes pickles instead of pursuing her dream due to the ban on women from higher education and limited job opportunities. With women's workforce participation dropping to 4.8% in 2023, many women now work in tailoring and food production. Despite facing challenges such as high bills and lack of support, some women try to navigate the restrictions by seeking permission to work in a female-only office set up by the labor ministry. The UN has criticized the Taliban for limiting women's potential, while the Taliban defend their approach by providing safe working environments for women in approved sectors without requiring degrees, impacting many women like Ahmadzai who are unable to utilize their skills in desired professions.
