In May, South Korea's semiconductor export prices surged at a record rate, boosted by the strong demand for AI products. The country's memory industry, led by Samsung Electronics Co. and SK Hynix Inc., experienced rapid recovery, with the semiconductor export-price index increasing by 42.1% in dollar terms from a year earlier. The surge is attributed to high-bandwidth memory used in AI accelerators like those from Nvidia Corp, creating a bottleneck for AI chip production. Chip exports have been on the rise since late last year, contributing to South Korea's economic growth. Chip exports for the first 10 days of May rose by 36.6%, indicating continued double-digit growth for the full month, with potential further boosts if Samsung secures orders from companies like Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices Inc.
