AI-powered stuffed animals are marketed as an alternative to screen time for children, but concerns arise about their impact on parenting. In a demonstration, Amanda Hess from The New York Times felt that the AI chatbot inside the plush toy Grem served more as a replacement for parental interaction than an enhancement. While they can engage kids and distract them from screens, Hess believes it sends a message that children’s curiosity should be directed towards devices. She eventually allowed her children to play with Grem, but with the voice box removed to mitigate concerns.
