Air Force Retired Colonel Sentenced to 20 Years in the Heaviest Espionage Case in History

On June 14, 2024, in a historical verdict, retired Air Force Colonel Liu Shengshu was sentenced to 20 years in prison for espionage, making it the heaviest sentence in judicial history in Taiwan. Liu Shengshu was found to have been recruited by Chinese mainland intelligence units and established a shell company in Taiwan, recruiting 6 current and retired military officers over 8 years. One of the recruits, a major surnamed Zheng, was a ground crew member at the Songshan Air Force Base, responsible for the President's exclusive aircraft. Violating the National Security Act, Liu and 3 other officers were convicted after a trial at the Supreme Court.
