At 4:25 am on June 16, 2024, the Central Weather Bureau issued an immediate thunderstorm alert for central Taiwan. The alert, affecting Nantou County and Taichung City, is in effect until 5:30 pm on the 16th, warning of heavy rainfall, thunder, strong winds above level 9, flash floods, landslides, rockfalls, debris flows, and flooding in low-lying areas with reduced visibility. The thunderstorm alerts continue until 5:30 pm for Taichung City and Nantou County; until 5:15 pm for Keelung City, Taipei City, and New Taipei City; and until 4:45 pm for Kaohsiung City and Pingtung County. The Bureau advises that intense convective activity often brings thunder, lightning, heavy rain, and the possibility of strong winds or even hail. These conditions could lead to rapid river/stream rise and waterlogging in poorly drained areas, impacting outdoor activities, visibility, and road safety, potentially causing landslides, rockfalls, and debris flows in mountainous areas.
