Amazon has become the first company to bypass a global carbon offset standard funded significantly by Jeff Bezos. The company is supporting a new standard, Abacus, to address the shortage of quality carbon offsets, allowing it to achieve its goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. Critics are concerned this move may lead to confusion and compromise offset standards. Other tech giants like Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, and Salesforce intend to purchase Abacus-certified credits, while concerns remain over the effectiveness and integrity of such carbon offsets.
