A couple from Queens, New York, unintentionally struck gold after using a magnet on their fishing rod to retrieve a rusty safe from a pond in Corona Park, containing $100,000 cash. They described the act as 'poor man's treasure hunting' and had previously found artifacts like grenades and guns but had never discovered real cash until now. After the police couldn't identify the owner of the safe, the couple was permitted to keep the money, although 60% of the notes were unidentifiable when pulled out. It took 11 people at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington, D.C., 9 months to clean and replace the wet bills. The man shared his excitement over the unexpected windfall, but also expressed fears over the sudden attention and people trying to profit from their discovery.
