A 34-year-old woman from Taichung, along with her boyfriend, who were studying for a master's degree in the U.S., were convicted of fatally beating the woman's father with a hammer in December 2021 due to resentment over financial support being cut off. The first trial sentenced them to life imprisonment, with the victim's widow and younger daughter appealing for the death penalty. However, the second trial upheld the original sentence, with the judge stating that despite the brutal act, assessments show potential for correction and rehabilitation, hence ruling out the death penalty.
