On July 5, 2024, the Taiwanese fishing boat 'Fuyang 266' was inspected by a Japanese patrol vessel near the Pengjia Islet, leading to the detention of the captain and chief engineer. The boat was suspected of illegally operating in Japanese waters, violating local fishing regulations. Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed concerns to Japan, and the latest update indicates that Japan has agreed to release the crew upon payment of a fine of over 600,000 Japanese yen (approximately 1.21 million Taiwanese dollars). The boat's owner has received the notice and is preparing to make the payment.
