Animation Production Company GAINAX Declares Bankruptcy After Creating 'Neon Genesis Evangelion'

Reported 10 months ago

During the AnimeJapan 2014 convention held in Tokyo on June 8, 2024, fans dressed up as characters from 'Neon Genesis Evangelion'. GAINAX, the Japanese animation production company known for creating popular works like 'Neon Genesis Evangelion' and 'Gurren Lagann', filed for bankruptcy on May 29 this year at the Tokyo District Court, as reported by Asahi Shimbun. Founded in 1984 by director Hideaki Anno and critic Takeshi Okada, GAINAX's financial situation deteriorated due to operations like privatizing the company and providing unsecured loans to executives. The rights to 'Neon Genesis Evangelion' currently belong to animation production company 'Khara' led by Hideaki Anno. Khara issued a statement expressing regret over the 40-year-old animation studio's closure and announced that it now owns and manages GAINAX's trademark.
