Due to declining birth rates, many private colleges and universities have been shutting down. Mingdao University in Pitou Township, Changhua County, faced closure after failing to improve as recognized by the Private School Closure Review Committee in June 2023, officially ceasing operations on July 31, 2024. The final graduation ceremony, happening tonight, is expected to have thousands of alumni attending, where the university will bid farewell with a 6-minute-22-second fireworks display. Despite efforts to save the university and offers of financial support, the deteriorating financial situation led to the decision to cease operations by the end of the academic year. The event is organized by alumni and student associations due to the lack of funding from the university itself.
