Apple experienced a 9% decline in smartphone shipments in China during the first quarter, falling to 9.8 million units, which translates to a market share reduction from 17.4% to 13.7%. This marked the seventh consecutive quarter of shipment decline for the company, while Xiaomi, the market leader, saw a 40% increase in shipments. Analysts attribute Apple's challenges to its premium pricing strategy, which limited its ability to benefit from new government subsidies aimed at boosting consumer electronics sales.
