In several towns in Changhua, Taiwan, disputes have arisen between a few residents and sanitation workers over whether eggshells should be recycled or considered kitchen waste. With the implementation of new waste classification regulations in July 2024, the determination of eggshells as either trash or kitchen waste varies among different townships, leading to heated arguments. While some argue that the mineral-rich eggshells should be treated as kitchen waste, sanitation workers typically classify them as regular trash. A compromise has been reached for bakeries and breakfast shops to separate eggshells for composting, but for most households, eggshells are to be disposed of as trash to prevent further conflicts.
