The army plans to extend the lifespan of its fleet of M60A3 tanks by purchasing 460 new gun barrels for the 105mm tank cannons from the Armaments Council's 202 Factory at the cost of NT$836 million. This initiative is part of the overall effort to upgrade the tanks, alongside replacing engines and renovating control systems, aiming for completion by the end of 2028. A third of the tanks are in need of new gun barrels due to wear and tear since their acquisition in 1994 and 1996. The army is also updating the tanks' control and sighting systems, with some components scheduled for completion by 2025.
