Dr. Liu Liwei from Tainan Municipal Hospital advises individuals experiencing palpitations and irregular heartbeat to seek early medical treatment to prevent serious consequences such as strokes. Atrial fibrillation (AFib) patients should be especially vigilant as temperature fluctuations challenge the body's physiological regulation, increasing the risk of blood clots forming in the heart. AFib, a type of heart arrhythmia, affects around 4% of individuals over 60 and up to 10% of those over 80 in Taiwan. If left uncontrolled, AFib can lead to heart failure, respiratory difficulties, fatigue, and edema. The formation of blood clots poses a significant risk, potentially causing severe strokes that may result in disability. Early diagnosis and treatment, including procedures like catheter ablation, medication for arrhythmia, and anticoagulants to prevent clot formation, are essential to manage AFib and reduce stroke risk.
