European markets opened with gains while Asian benchmarks retreated as U.S. stocks concluded their latest winning week. The futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 rose slightly, with France’s CAC 40 and Germany’s DAX also showing gains. Japan’s Nikkei 225 was the only major Asian benchmark to post gains, while the yen weakened to 159.75 to the dollar. On Wall Street, the S&P 500 slipped but remained close to its all-time high, while the Nasdaq composite dropped. U.S. Treasury yields initially fell on reports of weaker business activity in Europe, but recovered after news of strong activity among U.S. manufacturing and services businesses.
