AT&T's CEO John Stankey proposed that Congress should empower the FCC to compel Big Tech companies to contribute to a government fund supporting telecom and broadband services. Currently, fees are imposed on cell phone and landline subscribers to finance the Universal Service Fund. Stankey argued that tech giants should participate in ensuring affordable access to vital internet services. Amid the depletion of a broadband subsidy program, Congress is considering requiring tech firms and broadband providers to contribute to the fund.
