Australia regulator sues Medibank over data breach

Reported 4 months ago

Australia's privacy watchdog has taken legal action against Medibank, the nation's largest health insurance company, for a data breach that exposed the personal information of millions of customers on the dark web. The Australian Information Commissioner alleges that Medibank's failure to adequately protect the data constituted a serious privacy violation. Medibank had disclosed in 2022 that a hacker had stolen and leaked the personal data of around 9.7 million customers. The lawsuit could result in a civil penalty of up to A$2.22 million per violation under the Privacy Act, and it underscores the need for Australian companies to enhance their cybersecurity defenses in response to increasing cyber threats.
