With temperatures soaring, the Mackay Memorial Hospital has stated that over 400 people in Taiwan have sought medical treatment for heat-related injuries, cautioning against using extreme air conditioning settings, consuming excessive cold foods and drinks, sleeping on the floor, showering with cold water, or exposing bare skin to the sun as these methods may pose health risks. They recommend proper sun protection, staying cool, staying hydrated, consuming water-rich fruits and vegetables, avoiding alcoholic or sugary drinks, and maintaining healthy lifestyle habits for a safe and healthy summer. Older individuals, in particular, should take extra care due to diminished sweat gland function, lower circulation, and weaker gastrointestinal systems.
