Barcelona Residents Protest for Tourism Restrictions Due to Impact on Housing Prices and Employment

Reported about 1 year ago

Around 3000 Barcelona residents took to the streets on July 6, 2024, protesting the impact of tourism on the Spanish city, including skyrocketing housing prices and effects on job conditions. Residents marched along the Barcelona waterfront with banners demanding new economic models to reduce the millions of tourists annually. The protest also highlighted the surge in housing prices over the past decade, as well as the impact of tourism on commercial activities and job conditions in the city. Recently, the city council announced a ban on over 10,000 tourist rental apartments by 2028 to combat the negative impacts of mass tourism.
