Japan, with just a few hours of flight time from Taiwan, has always been a top choice for Taiwanese travelers. With the yen exchange rate hitting new lows, many are flocking to Japan for shopping. Despite being the second-largest source of visitors to Japan in 2023, Taiwan tourists contributed 778.6 billion yen (approximately 169.35 billion New Taiwan dollars) in consumer spending, ranking first globally. Travel expert Lin warns tourists to choose 'local currency' when paying by card to avoid unnecessary fees. Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) mechanisms can lead to additional costs if not careful, so Lin advises travelers to always select local currency for payments when in Japan.
