Starting from July 1st, when traveling, doing business, or studying in China, individuals should be cautious about using VPNs to access communication apps, as they may face scrutiny by Chinese law enforcement. This warning comes after China passed new regulations on April 26th granting authorities the power to conduct inspections of individuals' bodies and belongings, including accessing and investigating electronic data and evidence. Anyone, regardless of nationality, may be subject to investigation, and if deemed a possible threat to national security by Chinese authorities, law enforcement can unilaterally request sensitive information such as communication records, email logs, photos, and login details. The regulations are set to be implemented from July 1st onwards.
