Cherry pits can pose serious health risks due to the cyanide compound amygdalin they contain, which can be toxic when consumed. Swallowing whole pits is unlikely to cause harm as long as they remain intact, but breaking them open releases the amygdalin and increases the risk of poisoning. It is advised to avoid consuming cracked cherry pits and seek help from Poison Control if accidental ingestion occurs.
