Beware of Esophageal Cancer in Non-Smokers and Non-Drinkers

Reported 12 months ago

Esophageal cancer, a common cancer in Taiwan, has been found in two non-smokers, non-drinkers, and non-betel nut chewers. This occurrence serves as a cautionary reminder according to Dr. Wu Zongqin, a specialist in gastroenterology and hepatology. One of the patients, a young boss who does not smoke, drink, or chew betel nut, only enjoys drinking acidic beverages and neglected his chronic GERD symptoms, leading to esophageal adenocarcinoma. The other patient, a public servant with good health habits, also had GERD symptoms and Barrett's esophagus but failed to follow up on treatment. Dr. Wu emphasized the importance of early detection and monitoring, debunking the misconception that esophageal cancer rarely develops from Barrett's esophagus in Taiwanese individuals.
